Advice on the right connectors for all treated decking lumber.

More and more builders and remodelers are looking for ways to use “Environmentally-friendly” products in the home, such as the relatively-new exterior-treated lumber now making its way into residential use. In 2003, treated lumber producers changed their chemical composition for preservation treatment of decking lumber in an voluntary agreement with the EPA. The EPA set a mandate to significantly reduce Arsenic exposure to our environment, which is causing public health hazard according to the EPA.

Most lumber companies have voluntarily eliminated the use of CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) to meet the environmental concerns of leaching into soil, said Sherman Wiegel, Product Specialist, at Nisbet Brower for over 19 years. The new treatment of the environmentally-friendly exterior lumber is known as ACQ or Alkaline Copper Quaternary, which is arsenic free.
While this chemical material is considered harmless to the environment, ACQ is, however, somewhat more corrosive than standard galvanized connectors professionals have been accustomed to using, according to Wiegel. All treaters recommend use of stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized connectors, which will provide excellent “contact” with ACQ.
“We offer a full selection of Z-Max connectors from Simpson, which is a triple zinc-coated lumber connector, offering better performance and durability against ACQ contact as well as harsh weather conditions,” said Wiegel. We also have fasteners in nails and screws with the same features and benefits.
Nisbet Brower is now stocking 100% of the new treated lumber and appropriate connectors and fasteners and is available in stock in large quantities.
“Our new lumber offers the same lifetime warranty against pest and erosion.” |
